Formed in 1999, First Solar launched production of thin film solar modules commercial products in 2002. By 2008, the company had achieved the lowest manufacturing cost per watt in the industry, breaking $1 per watt. Considered the largest manufacturer of thin film solar modules, First Solar has also become involved in the construction of large scale ground-mounted solar projects ranging from large, grid-connected, commercial and utility-scale systems to residential and small commercial systems which utilize their photovoltaic (PV) systems. First Solar joined with Enbridge Inc. in the 3rd quarter of 2010, and began the operation of the 80MW Sarnia Solar Project in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, making it the largest operating photovoltaic facility in the world at that time. Also in 2010, First Solar began the construction on the Agua Caliente Solar Project in southeastern Arizona. The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2011, will have a capacity of 290MW, the largest of its kind in the world.
